Dimensional Weight Pricing Increasing Shipping Charges

February 02, 2015

Now that FedEx and UPS are using dimensional (DIM) weight pricing on ALL ground packages, not just those over 3 cubic feet, shippers are seeing costs rise. Those shipping lightweight packages and those with inefficient packing practices have been impacted the most.

Dim weight is calculated by multiplying the length x width x height (in inches) then dividing by the DIM weight factor. The domestic factor is 166 and the international factor is 139.

                       18 x 12 x 12  =  2592  =  15.61
                              166              166
Dimensional weight = 15.61 lbs. (rounded up to 16 lbs.)

Although the actual weight is 12 lbs., you now pay at the dimensional weight of 16 lbs.
